Celebrating Character, Commitment, and Community Through Sport

Each year, the Athlete of the Year Committee proudly recognizes one outstanding young woman and one outstanding young man who exemplify what it means to be more than just an athlete. These individuals don’t just play hard—they lead with heart, inspire their teammates, and make our community proud both on and off the field.

This award is a celebration of dedication, resilience, and the kind of sportsmanship that lifts everyone around them. It’s where talent meets character—and where Oak Brook comes together to cheer them on

Rooted in Oak Brook Values

The Athlete of the Year Award began in 1974, inspired by Oak Brook’s own Paul Butler. It has grown into a proud tradition of recognizing the athletic achievements of local high school seniors who have earned a varsity letter. More importantly, it honors those who use their journey in sports to inspire their teammates, support their families, and positively impact the Oak Brook community.

Who Can Be Nominated?

The Committee welcomes nominations from High School Athletic Directors for Senior student-athletes who meet the following criteria:

  • Must live in Oak Brook
  • Must be a high school senior who has earned a varsity letter in an individual or team sport
  • The Athletic Director must submit the required forms to the Athlete of the Year Award Committee
  • All graduating Oak Brook student-athletes are considered—no matter which high school they attend
  • Must demonstrate a positive impact on their team, school, or community

Community-Driven Selection

A dedicated group of community members gathers each year to carefully review all nominations. Finalists are recommended by local high school athletic directors, and the selection process typically takes place in mid to late May to ensure spring athletes have a full season to shine.

A Celebration of Community Spirit

The Athlete of the Year is honored at the Taste of Oak Brook, a community event filled with celebration and gratitude. Awardees also receive a 1-year free membership to the Oak Brook Park District, supported by the Oak Brook Park District Foundation.
