A Vision Takes Root
Launching the Raise It for Rao Fundraising Campaign has been a remarkable effort led by the Oak Brook Park District Foundation alongside the Devata Family, all united by a shared vision to bring the Outdoor Pickleball Project to life.
The Heart Behind the Mission
The partnership began shortly after the passing of Apparao (Rao) Devata, a beloved Oak Brook resident whose energy, kindness, and enthusiasm touched countless community members. Rao actively participated in many Park District programs and events and was a proud member of Fit & Swim Central.
A Passion for Pickleball
In his later years, Rao developed a deep passion for the sport of pickleball. More than just a player, he became a dedicated advocate for expanding the program and creating a beautiful, free outdoor amenity that could serve as a truly multi-generational gathering space for the community.
Known for his infectious laughter and positive spirit, Rao was a familiar and welcoming presence at events, programs, and even within the Foundation Board itself. He worked tirelessly to explore successful pickleball facilities throughout neighboring suburbs, learning from their fundraising efforts and gathering ideas he hoped to bring back to the community he cared so deeply about.
A Place for Everyone
At the heart of this project is accessibility and inclusion. The Outdoor Pickleball Courts are being envisioned as an ADA-accessible space where individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can participate, connect, and feel welcome. The goal is to create a place where seniors can remain active, families can play together, beginners can learn the sport, and individuals with disabilities or mobility challenges can enjoy recreation in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Turning Vision into Reality
Today, that vision continues through the Raise It for Rao Campaign.
The goal is simple, but powerful: we are seeking 250 community members, families, civic groups, philanthropists, businesses, and organizations to each contribute $1,000 to help raise $250,000 toward the construction of Oak Brook’s Outdoor Pickleball Courts.
Together, these contributions will help transform Rao’s dream into a lasting community space—one that supports recreation, connection, wellness, accessibility, and free programming right here in our own backyard.
