A Gift to Nature

The Bhoopalam-Devata Sugar Maple Grove at Dean Nature Sanctuary

Nestled in Oak Brook lies the 40-acre gem known as the Dean Nature Sanctuary, a true testament to nature's beauty and ecological diversity. This remarkable sanctuary, dedicated to preserving the area's natural splendor, offers a haven of tranquil wetlands, vibrant prairies, a serene pond, and flourishing forests, all coexisting in perfect harmony.

At a crucial moment, when the Foundation was seeking ways to preserve and enhance its natural spaces, the Bhoopalam-Devata family stepped up in a unique and meaningful way. Proud Oak Brook residents with a deep spirit of giving, Nirmala Bhoopalam and Apparao (Rao) Devata saw an opportunity to contribute to the Oak Brook Park District Foundation at just the right time. Their generosity brought the Bhoopalam-Devata Sugar Maple Grove to life, transforming a once-empty plot into a vibrant ecosystem that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

This heartfelt contribution of sugar maples does more than beautify the sanctuary; it enriches the landscape and promises sustainable resources for years ahead. The sugar maples will provide a critical source of nectar for the Foundations honeybees in the spring, supporting their health and productivity. The trees also offer shelter and food for local bird species, creating a thriving habitat for wildlife. In the coming years, the sap from these trees will be harvested to create maple syrup, with proceeds benefiting the Oak Brook Park District Foundation’s mission of preserving green spaces and expanding recreational programs.

The Bhoopalam-Devata family’s generosity extends far beyond the sanctuary’s borders. Their thoughtful contribution not only strengthens the park’s ecosystem but also symbolizes their deep commitment to community well-being. Their connection to the Oak Brook Park District—where they find health benefits, socialization, and a sense of belonging—made this project especially meaningful for them. This contribution will serve as a lasting impression on the community, helping future generations appreciate the value of philanthropy, nature, and togetherness.

Visitors to the Dean Nature Sanctuary can witness the flourishing ecosystem, with deer, foxes, and a rich variety of birdlife calling it home. The pond invites people of all ages to enjoy fishing, while the apiary's honeybees contribute to the pollination that keeps the landscape lush and vibrant. The Bhoopalam-Devata Sugar Maple Grove, in particular, stands as a testament to what can be accomplished when residents step forward to support the future of their community.

The Oak Brook Park District Foundation is deeply grateful for the Bhoopalam-Devata family's partnership, which reflects their dedication to both preserving Oak Brook’s natural beauty and building a legacy of environmental stewardship. This act of generosity is a reminder that when a community comes together to support nature, it can create a lasting impact that will benefit generations to come.
